Huperzine A is one of the alkaloids contained in a plant known as Chinese club moss. Other types of club moss are common in the United States, but true Chinese club moss is very hard to find on the U.S. market. It can be grown in Hawaii, but not in any other part of this country. Believed to be largely unchanged from prehistoric plants, club mosses are small ground covers that do not produce flowers. Related to the fern family of plants, they spread by sending out spores instead of seeds. They thrive in damp, shaded areas such as tropical woodlands and the edges of swamps. Huperzine A and huperzine B are two of the chemicals that have been separated from Chinese club moss. Huperzine B is also an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, but because its effects are much weaker than those of huperzine A, most research has focused on huperzine A. Synthetic forms of huperzine A have been made in chemical laboratories and they appear to be as effective as natural huperzine A in studies. Huperzine A has also been combined or "hybridized" with the prescription drug tacrine (Cognex), an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating Alzheimer's disease. The resulting "huprine" combination seems to be more effective at limiting acetylcholinesterase activity than either agent alone. Much more study needs to be done on the possible effects of huperzine A, huperzine B, huprine, and other chemicals derived from Chinese club moss.
Product Name: Huperzia Serrata Extract Latin Name: Lycopodium serratum Thunb Part of the Plant Used: Whole herb(Dried, 100% Natural) Product Specification: 1%,5%,98% Huperzine A Product Type: White Powder
BENEFITS AND EFFECTS:
Huperzine-A improves cognition, memory, learning, recall, is an antioxidant, helps neuroplasticity, and protects against glutamate-toxicity.
Huperzine A can be used as a memory enhancer. It is particularly effective when taken while studying for a test or when trying to learn any new material. It can also be taken regularly to help protect against age-related declines in memory.
Most clinical studies of huperzine A have focused on its use as a treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. A systematic review of 20 randomized controlled trials concluded that huperzine A appears to have beneficial effects on improvement of cognitive function, daily living activity, and global clinical assessment in participants with Alzheimer’s disease. None of the trials followed the patients for longer than 16 weeks to see if huperzine A could slow the progression of the disease, but other cholinesterase inhibitors have been found to slow the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.
Huperzine A has also been formally studied as a memory enhancer for students. The students were given a memory test, and then they were given either huperzine A or a placebo. Four weeks later, they were retested. They also took exams in language and mathematics covering the lessons received at school during the four-week time period. Huperzine A was found to significantly enhance memory. It did not, however, improve understanding of mathematics. It just improved the students’ ability to retain and recall facts. The students taking huperzine A had significantly improved scores on their language tests compared to the students taking a placebo.
